Sustainable Retrofit Family Home

An early 20th century house in Wimbledon has been upgraded to modern environmental standards whilst maintaining its character and contribution to the conservation area.

A three-storey extension was added at the rear. The design respects the character of the existing building and provides generous additional spaces including a large kitchen and garden room opening onto a stone paved terrace.

Working closely with interior designers and the homeowner, the existing interior spaces have been substantially upgraded to provide new ensuite facilities, bespoke joinery and new finishes throughout.

External insulation was added with carefully graded external render to increase the thermal performance. Other improvements included rainwater attenuation, improved joinery and glazing, increased roof insulation and an efficient modern heating system and controls.

The project demonstrates that older buildings can be retained and upgraded as an alternative to demolition.
