MBA carried out repairs to Harrow School Chapel [Grade II listed] in 2014.
Harrow School Chapel was built in 1854 to a design by Sir George Gilbert Scott when the School outgrew the seating capacity of the local Parish church. The Chapel is Grade II* and contains many important memorials to former pupils and staff, a fine reredos and decorative opus sectile alabaster wall panels in the apse by Sir Arthur Blomfield.
The external walls of knapped flint and Bath stone masonry were in poor condition due to weathering of the stone and the lime mortar, settlement, and the presence of rusting iron staples in the stonework. The stained glass windows were also in need of repair, due to settlement and decay of the masonry frames.
We deconstructed down to the top of the lancet windows. The central rose window was kept in place. We then reconstructed the wall using retained flints, with new Bath stone for the ashlar masonry, copings and quoins. We also renewed and repaired the masonry of the east end apse, including the fine east end windows, decorative elements and stop-end heads.
