King's College School Wimbledon

Sports Pavilion

A New Pavilion for King’s College School at West Barnes Lane was completed in September 2011. It provides new twenty-first century facilities for for twelve teams and staff, hospitality and ancillary facilities. A new car park provides parking for 92 cars and two coaches, and a new groundsmen’s building storage for tractors and materials.

The pavilion is situated towards the centre of the playing fields, giving spectacular views of the pitches from the first floor terrace. It has a tapering footprint so as to avoid the loss of useable space for sports.

The main entrance is at its northern corner, clearly visible from the site entrance. Activities directly related to the activity of playing sports: changing rooms, washing facilities, first aid and physiotherapy are at ground floor level.

Hospitality areas and an external terrace are at first floor level. Views of both the grass and all-weather sports pitches from the first floor are optimised by the central location, which minimises concerns about overlooking or disturbance for neighbouring residents.

The pavilion has been designed to provide flexible accommodation for varying proportions of male and female users with the potential to subdivide the building into zones, each with dedicated showers and WCs.

Environmental sustainability measures include the use of passive solar design: the roof providing shading from high angle summer sun and allowing low angle winter sun to penetrate, and by the provision of a photovoltaic ‘farm’ on the roof, designed to provide 20% of the building’s energy needs.
