How the design was developed
It was decided to create an entirley new boarding house by extending the original building - doubling its use whilst only marginally increasing its footprint - by inserting a new steel framed structure into the original courtyard and excavating around the lower ground floor to bring light and air into the basement. Building, landscape and adjoining buildings are all grade II Listed, the site is in a Conservation Area, so this radical approach had to be supported by a compelling need and applying principles of conservation: minimal destructive alteration and maximum reversibility.
